Andrew Keen’s New Book
Posted: March 12, 2012 | Author: cxthom | Filed under: Bookish | Leave a comment »I’m looking forward to Keen’s new book, Digital Vertigo. I read Cult of the Amateur, and while I work in, rely on and have spent my whole life in technology and social media, I still think he’s a voice of reason. It seems impossible to have discourse without polarization. I don’t think Keen is inviting us to either proselytize or reject social media; he’s asking us to have a think.
Tech media in its current form is likely a stepping stone to something more meaningful, but reductionism is always a threat – especially for a big thinker. My brain rapidly atrophies when I spend too much effort figuring out how to convey a though in 255 characters; even more so when I read them.
I saw Keen at SXSW a couple of years ago. It was a small room with only a few – albeit notable – people sitting on metal, folded chairs. He gave his talk. Three-quarters of the room sat with folded arms, and then moved in to set him straight.
Even egalitarians dislike being contradicted.
